Angeles

Angeles/Clark - the gateway to Northern Luzon and the entertainment capital of the Philippines - and for the night owl a destination in its own right. Mt. Pinatubo, from which the area rose like the proverbial Phoenix, is now one of the area's major tourist attractions.

There are many fine high star hotels and restaurants, offering some of the best value for money in Asia!

The legendary night-life varies from Casinos, an amazing number of Karaokes, and good old go-go bars. Even committed night owls would have a problem to visit them all in a week, let alone go back to the ones they like!

Evening sets in early in Angeles, as many of the establishments open from lunch time onwards. It is hard to see where you are, entering a club, as your eyes adjust to the sudden change from dazzling sunshine to moodily lit - air-conditioned - comfort.

Publishing a map and guide to Angeles - or more precisely Balibago, where most of the entertainment and tourist establishments are – is a problem, as new bars, restaurants and hotels open (and sometimes close) so quickly. Even Hong Kong in its hey-day would be pressed to match this mushroom syndrome.
Our review starts off at the Fil-Am Friendship Bridge, finally re-built after being damaged by lahar flows from Pinatubo, and years of
neglect by the city government.

Our review starts off at the Fil-Am Friendship Bridge, finally re-built after being damaged by lahar flows from Pinatubo, and years of neglect by the city government.

Just by the bridge there is a cluster of bars under the Nifty's/Club Rio group - Luscious, Pit Stop, & The Jolly Frog - certainly worth a visit.

A couple of Western oriented pub/restaurants  Cold Drop & Simple Asia are popular with the expat crowd heading home to the sub-divisions.

The predominant influence is Korean  and the area has been dubbed Korea Town. Establishments including Halla, Arirang, & Shilla, and a scattering of Japanese restaurants, hotels and KTV establishments.

Coming back onto Perimeter Road, Ichi-ban & Hana Mi are recommended Japanese eating, alongside Gyuu Korean Restaurant.  Popular with the biking set, E-Z Rider is another entertaining watering spot.

For the local flavour Karaoke set there is Aphrodisiac and Cotton Club, plus Stargate - new to the line up of bars.

The next cluster of establishments start from the Clarkton Hotel with it’s in-house Mirrors Club, and close by the old Genesis bars are now Lost in Asia, Roadies, and Tarts, and a sprinkling of lower end Karaoke’s.

Cottage Kitchen Restaurant serves the best New Orleans cuisine in Asia, and has the best steaks and ribs in Angeles.

Jack has traded his Cadillac for a Studebaker Café.  This has long been the location of a neighbourhood bar since Ray and Terry’s Streetlights Café.

Down the road just off Perimeter Road is the local VFW (with a really good restaurant open to non-members), and Patio V which offers weekly and monthly rates for accommodation.  This trio is completed with The Blue Boar Inn/La Casa Hotel a popular budget hotel.

Back on Perimeter Road, Cheers sits next to Willie Piggies eatery, while a little further down the new Savannah Hotel is a welcome addition to the accommodation market.

Further down a cluster of bars -  Honey Ko's, Hang Out plus, and Thi-Hi all established favourites.

“C” Italian Restaurant has a good reputation for its menu. T Times, 24 Hour Massage, Top Hat, Nasty Duck and Foxy bars are next on the strip.

After this comes Matrix Brawn bar with Sweety, Nifty's & Club Rio around the corner continuing to entertain.

Garfield’s a popular expat watering hole sits on the corner next to American Legion Post 10, Peanuts Bar & Illusions.

Zapata's Mexican Restaurant sits on the other corner, an excellent Tex-Mex experience.

Phoenix Hotel is probably the most popular  rest stop for out of town expats, and a watering spot for local expats.  On offer on the menu are the excellent Steve's Curries.

Dennis Rodman’s dad Philander Rodman has set up his hang-out Rodman's Rainbow beside Jocson’s down Plaridel Road.  Juke Box favourites play in the background to tales old and new about Angeles.  Stop by and tell Pilay “Ray told me to say Hi!”

The last bars, but by far the least are Emotions, and Touch of Class, both well run and welcoming.

The Gentleman's Club is a AH3 favourite, while downstairs Dr Holmes and Eruptions serve up more of the same.

Since the closure of Jerry's Café, the regular crowd moved around the corner to the Wobbly Boot on San Angelo (21st) Street.  The Wobbly Inn, and the new Angeles Beach Club Hotel end this small but entertaining strip.

Brass Knob Hotel and Bar is also very popular, as are Cherry’s and Stampede.  Jerrard’s Angeles Beach Club Hotel has tried to set new standards for Angeles - ignore the garish exterior - the inside is luxurious.

Enzienstubbe is a cozy bar attached to Edelweiss Tyrolean Restaurant.  The daily specials are exceptional value, and the menu extensive.

Margarita Station is at Checkpoint proper, and being right opposite the Jeepney Terminal is a natural meeting point, famously so.  Swagman Travel have another office close by, and the start of the

Fields Avenue
strip.

The first block contains the venerable D'Club, Insomnia, Lanies Meeting Point, and Alaska Bar.  Then Classroom 2, Bunny Ranch, Brown Sugar & Camelot.

At the next block Angel Witch, Salvatories Italian Restaurant, and the famous Roadhouse, one of the first Manila bars to re-locate to Angeles.  In the same building down

Constantine Street
is Butterfly Rock, and Bar Hopping.  Alongside is Chequers Bar.

On

Raymond Street
we come to Eager Beavers, followed by Las Vegas, and Blueberry Hill.  Roy's Bar, another Manila relocate is the British pub in Angeles, with Mrs Robinson’s Duke of York next door.

Back on Fields DMZ Bar, one of the few original Fields bars left, Doll's House, Gecko's, Lollipop, Ziggy's, La Bamba (another personal favourite) and Rhapsody take you to Santos Street on one side, and Angels, Owl's Nest & Pasha on the other.  To complete the tour of the Block we turn down Santos, and turn right into

Real Street
where we find Tom Cat, Confetti, Anchorage Hotel (the meeting point for the Angeles Hash).

Santos Street
is changing but one side still remains, starting with Gobbles and Heaven Bar, Black Pearl, an Angeles institution, Shadows, Wontok, Honky Tonk, and Niagara.  The last, but far from least is another Angeles original The Flaming.

Shano’s Irish pub occupy a huge downstairs area on the Vian Street Corner.

Wild Orchid Resort

Back on Fields Kokomos dominate the corner, with its in-house Voodoo and King of Diamonds and Motel.  Next door stands Dirty Duck.  Opposite is Lancelot, Azzaro Restaurant, Tender Touch, Treasure Island, Typhoon, Welcome Inn & Champagne.  Then the Royal Amsterdam Hotel,  Blue Nile Hotel and in-house Misty's.

After the Orange Lion Hotel, and Ned Kelly's, is the Viper Room, Cambodia, Bedrock, Nero's, & Blue Nile Clubs.  The new Walkabout Hotel also boasts a new Vortex club.

Good reports on the Bohemian Restaurant round the corner on MacArthur after Al's Mall.

On the way to Diamond, The AC RUMPA on

Surla Street
continue to serve a great American menu ((the breakfast is particularly good).

John's Peso Bar has re-located from the Square, and a popular place to watch the girls go by.

The Doghouse, home of the Beagles, has relocated from 1st Street onto Diamond Subdivision, while Rosalino's on MacArthur is a favourite haunt serving good value, tasty food, and the Casino Filipino is 100 metres away.

The Ponderosa Hotel has changed not only it's name to Ponderosa Hotel, but has also undergone renovation, and is under new management. Free hourly bus plies to and from the Fields Avenue entertainment district, making this one of the Philippine expat’s more popular hostelry.

There are several reasons to visit Hensonville, apart from the Hidden Vale Sports Club and the Villa Modesto Hotel.  - Ray's 1 Stop Cafe & Tavern, with its daily blackboard specials, and Wednesday evening BBQ.
